Internship
The New Jersey Equine Clinic offers two (2) internship positions to graduate veterinarians each year. The New Jersey Equine Clinic Internship is designed to help prepare graduate veterinarians for residency training or state-of-the-art private equine practice. Interns are responsible for daily patient care in the hospital and work with supervision of senior staff veterinarians in the diagnosis and treatment of horses admitted to the hospital or seen as outpatients. The detailed job description for the New Jersey Equine Clinic Internship experience is contained on the American Association of Equine Practitioners' website at http://www.aaep.org/avenues_details.php?intern_extern_id=52. Previous interns from the New Jersey Equine Clinic have gone on to pursue residencies in surgery, anesthesia and veterinary pathology, while others have chosen successful careers in private equine practice throughout the United States. Veterinary students who are interested in applying for the NJEC Internship should contact Dr. Jennifer Smith at jsmith@njequine.com.
Externship
The New Jersey Equine Clinic provides opportunities for veterinary students to participate in externship/preceptorship experiences at our hospital. Students from veterinary schools around the country spend brief periods of time observing clinical practice at our hospital, usually for 2 to 4 week periods. These students are exposed to diagnostic, therapeutic, and practice management theory and practice during their stay with us. The externship experience also serves as an excellent means for junior or senior veterinary students to “interview” with us and evaluate the New Jersey Equine Clinic for a possible internship following graduation from veterinary school. More information about the externship can be found on the American Association of Equine Practitioners' website at http://www.aaep.org/avenues_details.php?intern_extern_id=52. Veterinary students interested in applying for a NJEC Externship should contact the clinic for details and scheduling by emailing our practice manager, Bill Koons at bkoons@njequine.com.
Opportunity Scholarship Program
The Opportunity Scholarship Program is a University of Pennsylvania scholarship program that fosters scholarship support and mentoring opportunities for future veterinarians trained at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Palmer currently serves as one of the co-chairs of the Opportunity Scholarship Committee. The New Jersey Equine Clinic Opportunity Scholarship is just one example of our strong commitment to growing our profession by helping to shape the educational path of a veterinary student and future colleague.
